Serenely oblivious that they are substituting themselves for Jesus, the marketers of religion are convinced that their methods and ways are Jesus. But strategies, programs and ‘keys’ are no more Jesus than your tennis shoe is you.
Genuine community and discipleship depends on the abandonment of an us and them mentality.
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord. liberates us from Adam and captures us in Christ. With Jesus as our life we become His Kingdom in the world.
The Kingdom of God grows from seeds. A seed in Kingdom terms is Jesus. The planting of seeds is the planting of Jesus in hearts, minds and lives. God’s priests and kings grow because Jesus is planted and nurtured in them.
The Father planted Jesus and Jesus planted Himself in His disciples. At Pentecost Jesus planted Himself in all believers. It is the living Christ, not an icon or a theological construct who represents real love and the authority of the Kingdom of Heaven.
In Jesus we are the church and are arranged as His Body to multiply life without measure.
Jesus, being love itself, joins hearts together. This is not some mushy thing but the creation of empathy between people who are often quite different. Many human communities are based on some point of similarity but Kingdom communities are based on a living connection that is Christ in us.
Jesus said, ‘I will build My Church.’ This is how: Not by frenetic activity. Not by writing ‘Community Church’ on a large notice board. Not even by church planting unless the seed be Christ Himself. Then the seed that is cast into the ground produces the Kingdom of God.
“I have so frequently and over so long a period noted a lack of freedom even in very serious Christians that I feel I must try to remind us of what we are.”
Key to reigning as kings and priests with Jesus as ministers to the world is the understanding that life in the Kingdom of God is a state of being.
